This position will support the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (DOE OSTI) Security Officer in the administration of federal security compliance programs. The Industrial Security Specialist will focus on ensuring adherence to DOE security directives, including DOE Order 470.6 and NISPOM requirements, through activities such as personnel clearance support, access control coordination, audit preparation, and security documentation. This is a compliance- and policy-focused role with some coordination of physical security measures, such as building access and badging; it is not a guard or enforcement position. The individual in this role will help maintain a secure operating environment that supports DOE's mission and protects sensitive information and assets. A Bachelor's degree and US citizenship is required.


Position-Specific Duties

  • Ensures compliance with DOE security policies and federal regulations to protect sensitive information, materials, and secure areas.
  • Prepares detailed reports on security incidents, audit findings, and compliance status, maintaining documentation that meets federal requirements.
  • Supports the security clearance process, maintaining accurate records and ensuring all employees and contractors have the appropriate security clearances.
  • Assists with security audits and inspections, coordinating with federal agencies to ensure adherence to NISPOM and organizational security policies.
  • Facilitates and coordinates training for employees on security policies, information protection, and handling sensitive materials, promoting security awareness and compliance across the organization.
  • Assesses incidents of security concern, taking corrective actions to mitigate risks and prevent future occurrences.
  • Leads efforts in risk assessment and response for various security threats.
  • Oversees access to restricted areas and supports physical security measures, including badging and secure facility access controls, to ensure only authorized personnel are granted access.
  • Collaborates with government security agencies, internal stakeholders, and other security professionals to ensure effective communication and coordination on security matters.

Education, Training, Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in a security related field.
  • Experience with the Department of Energy's Technical Security Program DOE 470.6 is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of DOE security directives, particularly the DOE 400 series, is preferred. Experience with comparable federal security policies or agency-specific protocols may also be considered.
  • Familiarity with NISPOM (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual) and federal classified information handling procedures is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellent customer service.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in written format.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other MS Office applications; experience with security management systems is a plus.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks related to security and facility operations while maintaining attention to detail and a commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Self-directed, results-oriented, and adaptable; able to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and respond to security incidents promptly.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships across all levels of the organization, including with government agencies and contractors, to ensure coordinated security efforts.
  • Effective team player, able to work collaboratively as part of a diverse security team.
  • Ability to translate technical security information into audience-appropriate language for training, awareness programs, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of security protocols and federal security regulations, including NISPOM.
  • Strong understanding of physical security and access control procedures, with experience in facility security techniques and best practices.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to view computer monitor for extended periods of time.
