Overview
The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) seeks a highly qualified HPC Linux Systems Engineer to help improve security, performance, and reliability of NCCS computing environments. This includes supporting Frontier and other clusters and programs. Frontier is one of the scientific community's most powerful computational instruments for solving today's challenging problems. The position is within the HPC Scalable Systems Group in the NCCS Systems Section and involves supporting activities related to system installation, deployment, acceptance, performance testing, upgrades, problem diagnosis, and troubleshooting of large-scale HPC resources.
The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure with dedicated professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across disciplines. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE's National User Facilities. ORNL is a DOE Office of Science national laboratory with a history of solving major problems and a staff of over 6,000.

Special Requirement
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
For employment at ORNL, a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. ORNL is subject to DOE access restrictions. All employees must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by HSPD-12 and DOE Order 473.1A, requiring a favorable post-employment background investigation. New employees must successfully complete a Federal Tier 1 background check, which includes a declaration of illegal drug activities within the last year, including marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still illegal under federal law.
For foreign national candidates: If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and will need a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination. After meeting the residency requirement, a PIV credential is required to maintain employment.
