Senior Network Engineer

Location: Knoxville, TN
Salary: $105,000 - $135,648 USD Annually

About The Job: The Senior Networking Engineer plays a critical role in the design, implementation, and management of advanced network infrastructure. This position requires deep technical expertise in LAN, WAN, WLAN, cloud-based solutions, firewalls, and VPNs. The engineer ensures network reliability, performance, and security by developing scalable designs, optimizing traffic flow, and proactively addressing potential vulnerabilities. This role also involves cross-functional collaboration with IT teams to align network strategies with business objectives, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to complex projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage advanced network infrastructures (LAN, WAN, WLAN, Cloud).
  • Configure and maintain network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls, VPN appliances).
  • Apply expertise in network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, BGP, OSPF, SSL).
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement and maintain robust security measures.
  • Monitor, detect, and respond to network issues with timely resolution and documentation.
  • Conduct performance assessments and capacity planning for scalability.
  • Provide technical responses to incidents and implement long-term remediation strategies.
  • Continuously optimize network performance and implement improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Partner with IT teams to integrate network solutions into enterprise systems.
  • Provide training and guidance on network best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of configurations, protocols, topologies, and incidents.
  • Support routine and ad hoc audits to ensure policy and regulatory compliance.
  • Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain network hardware/software for optimal performance.
  • Develop disaster recovery plans focused on resiliency and continuity.
  • Collaborate on planning and validating new technologies or redesigns.
  • Lead or support re-architecture efforts to meet evolving requirements.
  • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 support to internal teams and vendors.
  • Mentor junior engineers and administrators.
  • Provide strategic direction and technical leadership on complex projects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in network engineering with enterprise-level design and implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of network protocols and hardware.
  • Experience with cloud-based networking and security integration.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or other cloud platforms.
  • Familiarity with network automation and scripting tools.
  • Experience with DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and mentor technical staff.
