Department: Counseling Center

Title of Immediate Supervisor: Director of Counseling

Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (10.5 mo. Grant Funded Position)

Pay Range: $46,603 - $55,924

SUMMARY

The Counselor will be responsible for providing both mental health and substance abuse counseling on an individual and group basis. The Counselor will provide consistent therapy for students with a variety of issues reflective of student age groups. The Counselor will have experience with typical addiction issues of college-age individuals and be able to provide workshops, training, and other related educational material to both students and employees related to these issues. The Counselor will collaborate with the First Steps Coordinator to provide a broad range of education and support for students and collaborate with partners on and off campus to provide addiction services to students. The position will work closely with the Director of Counseling to support the Bridges to Wellbeing initiative on campus

• Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

• Minimum of one year's clinical experience, preferably with college-age students.
• Minimum of one year's experience in developing, implementing, and facilitating workshops and training targeted for contemporary college students.
• Minimum of one year's experience in working with individuals with addiction and/or mental health issues

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leadership and Collaboration:

• Educate campus staff and students on addiction in a manner that increases the likelihood of improving students' knowledge in this area.
• Co-facilitate programming with the First Steps Coordinator when the topic includes mental health related materials.
• Coordinate with the First Steps Coordinator the supervision of any students running an addiction support group to maintain consistency of MC volunteers and/or interns.
• May work with Master's level Counseling interns on specific projects under the supervision of the Director of Counseling.
• Participate in any future grant-related activities and/or initiatives, such as Bridges to Wellbeing, and support both the Director and the First Steps Coordinator with both

Data, Technology, and Reporting

• Maintain confidential counseling records and gather salient data, such as demographics and components of care, following applicable state, federal, and ethical guidelines (e.g., as specified by licensure/credential, FERPA, and clinical training).
• Utilize technology and social media to promote mental health awareness campaigns and disseminate information about programming

Stakeholder and Institutional Support

• Counsel students with both mental health and addiction-related challenges.
• Assist students to understand, manage, and navigate social, emotional, and cognitive challenges, in pursuit of individualized, academic success

Operations and Technical Oversight

• Provide substance abuse workshops and other trainings for students throughout the year to support students and improve students' knowledge of the impact of addiction on their wellbeing.
• Design, implement, and facilitate addiction-related groups and support any peer-run group centered on addiction

Strategic Planning and Sustainability

• Become a trainer for QPR to promote suicide awareness and prevention on campus.
• Participate in other agency training, such as MHFA, to better assist students with questions and concerns

Other:

• HIPAA designated employee responsible for administering and handling the Personal Health Information of College students confidentially.
• Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse issues facing college students.
• Demonstrated professional prevention and support experience with substance abuse.
• Ability to design, implement, and foster groups related to addiction issues.
• Ability to communicate effectively and responsively before groups of students, staff, faculty, families/guardians, community members, and alumni.
• Ability to process significant amounts of data in a short period of time, applying a clinical lens and "common sense" understanding.
• Ability to resolve problems involving several variables in unpredictable situations.
• Familiarity with a variety of software systems, including Microsoft and Google applications; understanding of electronic health records a plus.
• Ability to coordinate and manage projects through collaborative efforts.
• Knowledge of laws and ethics surrounding counseling individuals with mental health or addiction concerns.
• Awareness of Title IX concerns and the impact of a variety of disabilities on student wellbeing

License, certification, or registration necessary:

• Must have Licensed Under Supervision status in the State of Tennessee to be considered. In-house supervision can be provided for those that have the LPC license.
• Training or certification in addiction a plus

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds.
• Ability to sit and use a computer for long periods of time.
• Ability to work occasionally after hours or on weekends for student-related activities; ability to work overtime when needed.
• Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff, and faculty
